Kits Greenway—Kits Beach

Concerns

  • Very heavy traffic on Arbutus between Cornwall and Creelman
  • Trucks on service entrance on Arbutus to Boathouse Restaurant
  • Three entrances for south parking lot on Arbutus
  • Recharging station for electrical vehicles on Arbutus
  • Conglomeration of cyclists, pedestrians, a children’s playground, multiple sports activities, a swimming pool ,food trucks and vendors in the Park
  • The Yew-Cornwall node includes a bus stop, making it one of the busiest spots in the park
  • Cyclists want to be near the water
  • Some cyclists aren’t comfortable with trees/shrubbery on the existing path bordering Cornwall

Possible Solutions

Seaside Greenway at Kitsilano Beach ParkProposed Concept
 Park Board Committee Meeting
Monday, March 12, 2018, at which Option 1 was preferred by HUB but opposed by the Boathouse Restaurant. The Development Permit issued to the Boathouse has no provision for parking behind the restaurant, but it is being continually violated by staff, plus delivery protocols in the Development Permit aren’t being followed. A decision was deferred back to Park staff for future study.

  • Add a chicane at the Yew/Cornwall node forcing cyclists to dismount to cross the main pedestrian path
  • Use the existing bikeway along Cornwall but cut to the service road to connect with the Balsam Local Street Bike Lane
  • Thin or prune shrubbery along Cornwall to improve view planes
